Lenovo is more than just PCs. Here’s how they’re focusing on sustainable and AI-focused solutions for customers.

When most people hear the name Lenovo, PCs and laptops immediately come to mind. After all, the company is recognized as the world’s leading PC company, with over 1 billion customers and 35 manufacturing locations across the globe. But today’s digital landscape is shifting, and customers are looking for more than just a device provider — they’re seeking a holistic relationship with a single, end-to-end IT partner.

Lenovo has risen to this challenge with a service-led strategy that has transformed it from PC manufacturer to a comprehensive solutions provider. In fact, its non-PC business now accounts for 41% of the company’s revenue. Lenovo still builds industry-leading devices, but these are seamlessly integrated with infrastructure, solutions, and services. Central to this transformation is Lenovo’s global sourcing and local delivery blueprint that enables the company to harness its extensive global resources while remaining agile and attuned to local customer needs.

Shifting toward service-led technologies

Lenovo isn’t just adapting to this new holistic, service-led paradigm — it’s pioneering it. Lenovo was the first to define new Intelligent Transformation (IT) and the technology architecture required to realize its Client-Edge-Cloud-Network-Intelligence approach. This comprehensive strategic framework is empowering Lenovo’s customers to undergo profound, transformative shifts.

By combining industry-leading, customer-centric intelligent devices with services such as consultancy, installation, operations, maintenance, and solutions, Lenovo is a trusted partner that turns vision into value across industries.

Revolutionizing customer services

The benefits of software-as-a-service (SaaS) are well-established. But the new era of hybrid working and learning is driving an everything-as-a-service (EaaS) revolution. This extends the model to devices, infrastructure, and cloud. There are three major trends driving this: A change in mindset from ownership to accessibility; a growing interest in sustainability by using only what you need; and an increasing demand from small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) who have seen the benefits to larger corporations. The providers that understand these customer needs and most seamlessly design, deploy, and manage the right solutions will lead the pack.

Lenovo was an early mover, leveraging its TruScale Infrastructure Brand to launch the TruScale EaaS platform in 2021. TruScale provides everything from pocket to cloud through a single contract framework. Crucially, it provides the solutions and technologies for customers to meet unanticipated changes in the ever-changing digital landscape. TruScale, like all of Lenovo’s products and services, is built on a security-first culture and focused on infrastructure, supply chains, and physical asset security.

Focusing on AI

At the heart of Lenovo’s transformation is an unyielding commitment to Research and Development (R&D). With 17 global R&D centers and over 33,000 patents, Lenovo has consistently been at the forefront of innovation. From the creation of the 360-degree hinge and defining new categories like convertible PCs and foldable smartphones to best-in-class water cooling technology and industry-leading supercomputers, it’s no wonder that 20% of their 77,000-strong workforce is devoted to R&D.

Lenovo continues to innovate around the Client-Edge-Cloud-Network-Intelligence technology architecture with the ThinkPhone, ThinkReality VRX, and the extreme performance ultimate desktop ThinkStation among other recent technology developments.

Already ranked third for AI hardware infrastructure, Lenovo is investing an additional $1 billion over the next three years to fast-track AI deployment across devices, infrastructure, and solutions. This investment will allow them to weave AI into offerings, such as AI-powered device intelligence and AI-augmented solutions. AI will be integrated throughout its device lifecycle, pioneering the transformative shift towards AI PCs.

Prioritizing sustainability

No meaningful transformation today is complete without an unwavering focus on sustainability across the organization and strong environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals. Lenovo is committed to becoming an industry leader in sustainability. After surpassing their 2020 emissions reduction targets ahead of schedule, they’re now focused on becoming net zero by 2050.

Lenovo is the first PC and smartphone maker to be validated by the Science Based Targets initiative. By 2025, Lenovo aims to obtain 90% of its global operations’ electricity from renewable sources and achieve a 50% improvement in the energy efficiency of desktops and servers. They’re also striving to remove one million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions from their supply chain annually.

Lenovo’s revolutionary Neptune cooling technology improves energy efficiency and reduces emissions. While the EaaS model also helps optimize resources, eliminate duplication, inefficiency, and excess. But emissions aren’t the only problem — the technology industry produces 53 megatons of e-waste every year, but is recycling less than 20%. Lenovo has been reinventing the supply chain, and by 2025, 100% of its PC products and 90% of its PC plastic packaging will contain closed-loop, post-consumer recycled materials.

More than just a PC company

As the wave of digital and intelligent transformation swells, global IT expenditure is poised to skyrocket. Lenovo’s New IT model is primed to cater to evolving customer needs, and its journey of transformation strategically places it to harness this growth. Lenovo is at the cutting edge of R&D, redefining computing, and helping to solve some of humanity’s most pressing challenges. As a global technology powerhouse, Lenovo is showing us that a PC company can be so much more.
