Melania Trump rejected repeated requests from her husband to join him on the campaign trail, per the NYT.
Trump said in a new interview that actually he’s been keeping her away but she’ll join him “soon.”
“She’s a private person, a great person, a very confident person and she loves our country very much,” he said.

Six weeks ago, The New York Times reported that Melania Trump had repeatedly rejected requests to join her husband, former President Donald Trump, on the campaign trail as he runs for president a third time. Last weekend, a plane flew a “Where’s Melania?” banner over a football game in Iowa that Trump attended.

“Meet the Press” moderator Kristen Welker asked the former president this week about Melania’s absence as part of an interview that will air on Sunday during Welker’s first episode as host.

“We’ll see her on the trail soon?” she asked.

“Yes. Soon? Yeah, pretty soon. When it’s appropriate, but pretty soon,” Trump responded. “She’s a private person, a great person, a very confident person, and she loves our country very much.”

“And honestly, I like to keep her away from it. It’s so nasty and so mean,” he added.

In July, the Times reported that Melania had refused her husband’s requests to join him on the campaign trail because she feels she was betrayed by staffers and friends during her time in the White House. Despite her refusals, sources close to the Trumps insisted to the Times that she still privately supported his candidacy and believed he could win the presidency again.

Melania also hasn’t appeared at any of her husband’s recent court hearings.
